2017 Audi A5 – Audi offered the A5 Coupe in 2007, signaling its return to the section after over a decade of sitting on the sidelines. In 2012, the German maker updated the superior two door with a mid-cycle refresh, but it’s time for the second generation to take the blowtorch. Standout revisions include more efficiency thanks to improved aerodynamics and a lower curb weight, more power from the range of four- and six-cylinder engines, and an impressive catalog of technological inventions for safety, convenience, and infotainment.
2017 Audi A5 Review
It mightn’t seem it, but behind the evolutionary styling update of the 2017 Audi A5, there is a new platform and a host of technological and mechanical upgrades which make it the most advanced offering in its class. We got to try the new A5 on the windy roads beyond Porto, Portugal, which gave us an in-depth look at the car underneath the unremarkable outside.
2017 Audi A5 Exterior
The 2017 Audi A5 lineup is no longer new-faced; however, it’s one of the most attractive (and often imitated) designs on the marketplace—offering a look that’s handsome, refined, and understated, with an interior that actually fits the exterior.
Though there are lots of imitations that have, ahem, borrowed some of the sheet metal and trim details of the A5 over the years (we’ve heard several automakers say it was a design goal), the A5’s profile remains exceptional in the market. Audi leader designer Walter d’Silva regards the A5 as his most beautiful layout to date.
In it, we observe muscle haunches that evoke classic sports cars, blended with modern details in a way that gives the A5 (and it’s sportier, more competitive S5 and RS 5 forms) definite road presence; from a distance it transforms space and somehow has the position you’d associate with a bigger coupe.
LED lighting helps give a face that’s instantaneously identifiable to the A5; but if we could point to a single spot where the A5 is a bit less extraordinary in its design, some six years in, it is the front end.
2017 Audi A5 Interior
Its interior makes up for it if the A5 is too subdued outside. Lifted nearly directly from the A4, the well-appointed cottage is remarkably intuitive yet technology-rich. A base A5 will come at a cost with leather seats and a moonroof Audi steers will undercut the C300 4Matic’s. And no C300 can be loaded up with as many goodies. Our favorite is the user-configurable Virtual Cockpit, a 12.3-inch LCD instrument panel that can be set to look like basic gauges, a borderline sensory overload map with Google satellite imagery, or a blend of the two. Buttons on the three-spoke steering wheel cycle effortlessly through various screens, but much of the advice is repeated on a likewise clear, iPad-mosque display above the central air vents. That screen is for Audi’s MMI Plus infotainment system controlled by a tremendous rotary knob topped with a touchpad found just behind eight welcome preset buttons. Owners and MMI Plus via a smartphone app can communicate, and when they’re in the car there are two USB ports available for Android Auto or Apple CarPlay connection; Qi-equipped devices can be charged on an inductive pad. A discretionary Driver Assist program for the A5 will permit some measure of autonomous driving for those who buy a sporty coupe but don’t actually desire to drive it all the time.
2017 Audi A5 Engine
The new A5 will launch in Germany with the choice of five different engine packages, including two TFSI (gasoline) options and three TDI (diesel) alternatives. The outcome will range between 286 horsepower and 190, with up to 17 percent more electricity and 22 percent better fuel economy.
U.S. customers, however, should anticipate just a single engine – the mid-range turbo four-cylinder petrol unit creating around 255 horsepower.
Routing the muscle will be the choice for a manual six-speed or a seven-speed automatic S Tronic. The range-topping diesel (Europe only) will get an eight-speed Tiptronic. Both FWD and AWD will be available.
Interestingly, Audi is upgrading its famed Quattro AWD system with something called. And while the first guess pointed towards the availability of a hybrid vehicle drivetrain, Audi has yet to verify the rumor.
2017 Audi A5 Price
Our sources inform us that the vehicle will be offered to dealers in the last quarter of 2016 though Audi is yet to declare costs and official release date. When it comes to cost, the 2017 Audi A5 will begin at around MSRP $ 40,000 for the base trim with higher trims and additional choices costing as much as $ 70,000.
